BRUCE HENNIGAN
OUR AUTHORS
Bruce Hennigan was born and raised in the isolated countryside of Blanchard, Louisiana, a place full of possibilities for the active mind of a young boy. The fertile imagination he cultivated while playing deep in the Louisiana woods would lead to a lifelong love of creative writing.
His family left him with a strong heritage of storytelling. His parents, aunts and uncles often told stories of life during the Great Depression and World War II.
Following their example of storytelling, Bruce wrote his first short story at age 13 and was soon involved in drama. He decided he wanted to become a full-time writer by the time he was a senior in high school, but was still unsure of his future. Bruce prayed to God for guidance, who showed him that a career in the medical field awaited him. Though he continued to write throughout college, Bruce earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport in 1979. Bruce completed an internship in internal medicine and subsequently completed residency and fellowship in Diagnostic Radiology. Bruce has been in practice with Red River Consultants, the radiology group for the Willis Knighton Health Care System since July, 1983.
In 1980 Bruce married Sherry Kidd, and together the couple had a son, Sean, and a daughter, Casey. In 1995 Bruce suffered deep depression from which it would take two years to emerge. He developed his LifeFilter plan and subsequently authored a book with Mark Sutton, Conquering Depression, published by Broadman & Holman (now B&H Publishing) in February 2001.
From 1992 until 2006, Bruce served as drama minister at Brookwood Baptist Church in Shreveport, where he wrote Christian dramas, performed in ministries across the country. Bruce and Brookwood’s pastor, Mark Sutton, co-authored Conquering Depression: A Thirty Day Plan for Finding Happiness (B&H, 2001), based on their experiences overcoming depression. Bruce was then asked to contribute a column for Extra!, the online resource for Lifeway ministries, which he wrote for the next four years.
In 1998, Bruce enrolled in the Volunteer Apologist education program by worldwide ministry Reasons to Believe, in order to engage his medical colleagues who often demanded scientific evidence for Christianity. In 2006, Bruce pursued the Certified Apologetic Instructor Certificate from the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. He has become a frequent speaker at regional and state events on apologetics and his strong point is in making these sometimes hard to understand issues easily approachable for the average Christian.
Bruce’s experience in apologetics inspired him to write his Chronicles of Jonathan Steel series, a book series of supernatural Christian thrillers that combines science and faith.
Bruce currently resides in Shreveport with his wife and daughter. He continues to write and to practice radiology at the Willis Knighton Health Care System.
In 2019, Bruce Hennigan and Mark Sutton updated their depression book and now, the third edition has just been recently published entitled, “Hope Again: A Lifetime Plan for Conquering Depression.”
